The Duchess and the Sailor (Ben/Polly fanmix)
Influenced by riverdresses's "The Great & Mighty Troughton Rewatch-athon", I decided to explore my music folder again and returned with enough songs for a Ben/Polly fanmix.
As with the Zoe mix, I tried to combine the message in the lyrics with the style of the songs, this time by trying to use songs from Ben and Polly's own time period. Only a few of them are actually from the exact year they came from (1966, for those of you unfamiliar with the Troughton era), but they're all from the same period - and, more importantly, I feel they all fit wonderfully with the two of them, together or apart.
Enjoy!

1. I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles
Oh, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another
Since I saw her standing there

2. Polly - The Kinks
Pretty Polly, dressed as jolly as can be
She's so dolly, all the fellas do agree

3. The Boat That I Row - Lulu
The boat that I row won't cross no ocean
The boat that I row won't get me there soon
But I got the love if you got the notion
The boat that I row's big enough for two
Me and you

4. Night of Fear - The Move
The bell strikes and your spine chills like the grave
The chill that turns your blood from red to grey
You know that with these things you see and hear
The silent night has turned to a night of fear

5. Sail On, Sailor - The Beach Boys
I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion

6. Something is Happening - Herman's Hermits
Soon as you started to kiss me
Something new suddenly hit me
The world over it's always happening
The same sort of thing to others too
Something is happening to me
And I only hope the same thing is happening to you

7. Do You Want to Know a Secret? - Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas
Listen
Do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell?
Closer
Let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear
I'm in love with you

8. Sometime in the Morning - The Monkees
Sometime in the evening
You're sitting there by the fireside
And she'll touch you
And you realize how much you never knew before
How much you couldn't see

9. All the Love in the World - West Coast Consortium
Baby, you give the sun reason to shine
You make this life about a dream

10. My Little Lady - The Tremeloes
You can make the sun and moon begin to shine
And if you could have your way every day would be fine
It's no wonder for as long as I may live
I will give you all the love I am able to give

11. Here, There and Everywhere - The Beatles
I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there

12. A Groovy Kind of Love - Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders
Anytime you want to you can turn me onto
Anything you want to, anytime at all
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver
Can't control the quivering inside

13. There's a Kind of Hush - Herman's Hermits
So listen very carefully
Get closer now and you will see what I mean
It isn't a dream
The only sound that you will hear
Is when I whisper in your ear
I love you forever and ever

14. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Waterloo underground
But Terry and Julie cross over the river
Where they feel safe and sound
And they don't need no friends
As long as they gaze on Waterloo sunset
They are in paradise

*ganks with thanks* Brilliant idea! Nothing like some period music to get the Ben/Polly writing mojo going (doesn't hurt that they are good songs either *g*)...

Thank you! I know just what you mean, as I tend to listen to music that I feel relates to the characters or situation while I write.

Totally snagging! I'm currently making a similar fanmix, actually.

Ooh, looking forward to hearing it, then! The more Ben & Polly, the merrier.

I love your mixes so much! Downloading this and the Zoe mix, since apparently I was gone when you posted that? x3

I hope you enjoy them, my dear. Let me know if the Zoe mix needs re-uploading, though I think it might still be active.

They're lovely!
And yes, it was still active. ^__^

Ben and Polly!! Man, it's been ages since I ever saw them on Dr Who reruns. I did read the "lost adventures" with them, though. :) Thanks for the mix!
Just Pat: Pollynentari on June 15th, 2009 01:12 am (UTC)
There is one complete story of them left, so unless you get your hands on the recons for the others it's nearly impossible to find them, which is a shame.
Enjoy the mix!

Just wanted to say, I've been enjoying the mix a lot. :) I love that you used contemporary (for them) songs instead of more recent tunes. I hadn't heard most of these before and I really love most of them. So thank you again for making this mix. :)

Aw, thank you! I'm a huge fan of '60s music, so I had a lot of fun browing through my music folders in search of contemporary songs that would fit well with Ben and Polly.

I've never even seen them in action, but I'm loving these music choices :D
Just Pat: Pollynentari on June 15th, 2009 07:20 am (UTC)
Oh, you should. Their debut story, The War Machines, is the only one from their run that has survived in its entirety, and it's out on DVD (and there's rumours that the first regeneration story, The Tenth Planet, might one day be released with the missing fourth episode animated by Cosgrove Hall, like they did with The Invasion). My personal favourite Ben & Polly story, however, has to be The Highlanders - for that serial, Doctor Who should have been renamed The Polly Wright Show. :)

Oops, I'm seeing myself rambling about those two again - sorry.

You know, I think I got an audio version of The Tenth Planet somewhere. I'll check it out :D

*g* After enjoying your Zoe fanmix so much, there's no way I can resist giving this one a try, too! (And much love for Polly and Ben!)

Aw, you insist on making me blush, don't you? *g* I hope you'll like it.

I am so sorry, but i saw your mix and i absolutely fell in love with it - the songs fit them so well! but i couldn't download it - would you mind re-adding the link to a downloadable file? I'll just keep refreshing the page, or you can email it to me at evillaughter101@yahoo.com.

Or not, if you're too busy - just that I would realllyyyyy appreciate it!

It's absolutely no problem. Re-uploaded the link for you. :D
